Starvation cause death of over two hundred thirty-nine children

(MENAFN) At least 239 children have lost their lives in western Sudan since the beginning of the year due to severe shortages of food and medical care, according to a statement released Sunday by the Sudan Doctors Network.

The organization reported that the deaths occurred between January and June in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, where children have been dying from malnutrition and the critical lack of basic medical resources.

The group highlighted an alarming deterioration in conditions, warning that hunger is worsening and that nutrition centers for children have been deliberately targeted. El Fasher remains encircled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has intensified the humanitarian crisis.

“The Network deeply regrets the international community’s continued neglect of Darfur’s children, who have endured more than a year under siege,” the statement read. It described a catastrophic situation in both the city and nearby displacement camps, where food and medicine are nearly nonexistent and the prices of essential goods have become unaffordable.

An urgent call was made to protect the remaining civilians trapped in El Fasher, where the population remains under constant siege and bombardment. The group also appealed to regional and global organizations “to put pressure on the Rapid Support Forces to accept and implement the truce proposed by the UN Secretary-General.”

“Immediate action is needed to open humanitarian corridors, allow the delivery of emergency aid and medical supplies, and lift the siege that has gripped El Fasher for over a year,” the statement urged.
