Two Killed as Fire Erupts at Displacement Camp in Sudan’s North Darfur

(MENAFN) At least two people lost their lives when a massive fire engulfed makeshift shelters for displaced families in Tawila, North Darfur, a local emergency official confirmed to media.

The blaze erupted on Monday, rapidly spreading through the Hilla Naima area of Tawila, roughly 37 miles west of El Fasher. Dozens of homes made from local materials were destroyed, leaving numerous families without shelter, the media outlet reported.

"Among the dead was a 12-year-old child," said Yahya Ibrahim, a member of the Tawila Emergency Room.

Tawila has become a primary refuge for civilians fleeing violence near El Fasher, particularly after paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized control of the city on Oct. 26, 2024. The town currently shelters approximately 655,000 displaced people, most of whom escaped El Fasher via dangerous routes seeking safety, media reported.

Sudanese authorities and regional rights organizations have previously accused the RSF and their ally, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, of committing violations against civilians.

Violence has escalated in recent weeks across the three Kordofan states—North, West, and South—forcing tens of thousands to abandon their homes.

Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF now controls all five in western Darfur, except for parts of North Darfur still under army control. The army maintains control over most areas of the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum.

The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has killed thousands and displaced millions across the country.
