12 Missing as Ferry Capsizes in Sudan's White Nile State
The watercraft submerged in the Wad al-Zaki area carrying 16 individuals—including multiple women—according to the organization. Search and recovery operations remained active to ascertain the status of missing travelers.
The Sudan Doctors Network issued urgent recommendations to government officials, calling for comprehensive inspections of all river vessels, mandatory enforcement of safety protocols, establishment of passenger capacity restrictions, and guaranteed availability of emergency rescue apparatus to avert future catastrophes.
Saturday's sinking occurred merely days following a deadly Nile River accident in northern Sudan that claimed at least 21 lives when a passenger ferry transporting over 27 people overturned, regional authorities confirmed.
Nile River state government officials disclosed Thursday that recovery teams had retrieved 21 bodies after Wednesday's capsizing, with operations continuing for those still unlocated.
Regional media outlets indicated the vessel was navigating between Taiba Al-Khawad and Deim Al-Qarray within Shendi locality when it overturned, carrying women, children, and elderly travelers aboard.
Following that incident, the Sudan Doctors Network highlighted systemic failures in river transportation infrastructure and fundamental safety deficiencies, alongside the delayed response from local government and civil defense personnel during critical initial response periods, "which exacerbated the scale of the disaster."
