Fire Tears Through Sudan Camp, Leaving 60 Families Homeless
The blaze tore through Al-Omda camp in the Tawila area, incinerating roughly 50 shelters and partially gutting several others, the UN agency reported. Displaced residents were relocated to open ground within the same locality as emergency responders assessed the damage.
The camp is home to thousands of internally displaced people living in makeshift structures assembled from wood, straw, and other highly combustible materials — conditions that experts warn make such settlements acutely vulnerable to fire. The cause of the blaze remains unidentified.
The scale of the destruction, however, remained in dispute. An earlier IOM statement issued the same day put the figures significantly higher — citing 237 families displaced, with 158 shelters completely destroyed and 79 others partially damaged.
Tuesday's incident is the latest in a series of fires to strike the camp. Just last week, the Tawila Emergency Rooms Coordination Council, a local relief organization, reported that a separate blaze razed 250 shelters, killed one child, and affected approximately 1,500 families.
The recurring disasters unfold against the backdrop of Sudan's catastrophic civil war — a brutal conflict between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that has raged since April 2023. According to UN reports, the fighting has killed tens of thousands, uprooted some 13 million people, and unleashed one of the most severe humanitarian emergencies on the planet.
